12MAY2020 - ‘Cause Four Outta Five Ain’t Bad
My plan was to trailer the TransAlp down to Gooding and start a 300 mile loop to hit five sites:
02 - Little City of Rocks
22 - Bear Trap Cave
21 - Albion Normal School
23 - City of Rocks
24 - Evel Knievel Jump Site
This proved to be an overly ambitious goal. I only got the first four. But, in the immortal words of Meatloaf from 1977; “don’t be sad ‘cause two outta three (or four outta five) ain’t bad.”
23 - City of Rocks
Continuing south, ID-77 turns into the City of Rocks Backcountry Byway. This is a spectacular road with beautiful vistas and tons of old west history. Again, plan on spending more time than you might think stopping at the frequent “points of interest.” Something that’s cool and not marked on any maps are the two old Indian Motorcycles surrounded by tall grass in the side yard of a house on the west side of the road just as you enter the town of Almo from the north. At the south end of town you’ll see a sign pointing you west on a dirt road to City of Rocks. This is a very well traveled (and maintained) gravel and dirt road. It wasn’t too dusty today, but I imagine it gets pretty bad at times.
I chose to take my photo at Window Arch which is a quick 300 yard walk from the parking area, and about a quarter mile from the IAMC waypoint. It was well worth the short hike. There are really nice cask restrooms just up the way from the Window Arch parking area. They were even well stocked with toilet paper!
By now it was after 1600 and time to head back to Gooding via pavement, load the bike on the trailer and head back to Boise. Evel Knievel’s Jump Site will have to wait for another day.

Not a bad day for August.  Smokey.  Spent the day climbing with the scouts.
